Unicorns

It seems that everywhere you look, you’ll see rainbow colored unicorns! Whether it’s hairstyles, cakes, and now even a Starbucks drink! So what’s the big deal? Why are unicorns so popular and honestly, do we really even know if a real unicorn is rainbow colored? These questions launched us into research, we suddenly needed to know everything about unicorns! It appears that unicorns were first discussed in the Bible! Maybe unicorns truly did walk this earth at one time? Psalms 29:6 “He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.”Numbers 24:8 “God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.”Isaiah 34:7“And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.”Though it’s difficult to determine what the word ‘Unicorn’ means in the bible and more current translations of the bible don’t use the word, ‘Unicorn’. Could the early version be referring to a Rhino and not a horse with a horn, (Unicorn)? In the earliest edition of Webster’s Dictionary (1828 version), a unicorn is described as, “an animal with one horn; the monoceros, this name is often applied to the rhinoceros.” So, is it possible, we have labeled unicorns all wrong?
Though unicorns are mentioned many times throughout the bible, they also appear within Greek Mythology. While the Bible isn’t clear what a unicorn is or what it looks like, Greek Mythology is quite clear, Hippos Monokeras means unicorn horse and were described as a white horse, with a bright multi-colored horn on it’s head. This explains why we depict unicorns with rainbow horns! Specifically this may have come from the Greek historian Ctesias of Cnidus, in his writing, he described the unicorn as having a tri-colored horn it’s head. “the unicorn’s body is white, the head is dark red, the eyes dark blue; the base of the horn is white, the upper part crimson, the middle section black” -Elmer G. Suhr “An Interpretation of the Unicorn”Many of the ancient scholars believed that Unicorns lived in India. India was a distant land to the Ancient Greeks which led them to believe this mythical creature lived and breathed in the magical distant land. Some believe that the Unicorns became a lost species that suffered from extinction when hunters ruthlessly tracked these creatures. As time has marched on… we have found no fossils, bones, or any actual evidence that Unicorns really walked this Earth and in modern culture we idealize Unicorns, they are everywhere! While there seems to be no real evidence of unicorns, obviously they are alive and well in our imaginations!
