Celebrity Soul Selling

Who wouldn’t want fortune in this world… Though oftentimes fortune is coupled with fame… How far would you go to accomplish this? In this episode, we will discuss the theories surrounding a few celebrities who are accused of selling their soul to achieve fame and fortune. Usually a deal with the devil is referred to as the Faustian Bargain, referring to a German Doctor. Johann Georg Faust was an alchemist, magician and astrologer during the German Renaissance. It was said that Dr. Faust made a deal with the Devil, giving up his soul to fulfill “every lust in Faust’s heart.” Of course all of the things he lusted and wished for all went terribly wrong and after many years, Faust wanted to withdraw from the deal. There are so many different versions of this story, but the ending usually ends with Dr. Faust was carried off to hell to be tormented eternally. Then there is the legend of one of the greatest guitar players of all time. The legend states that Robert Johnson was at a crossroads where he met the devil. The devil tuned his guitar and taught him the blues. It is said the devil only wanted him to die early. Though many state his real death came from poison. Poisoned by a jealous husband after being caught with his wife.
Fast forward again to another great artist… Bob Dylan. Obviously he rose to success pretty quickly and once in an interview he took fans by surprise by his answer to a strange question.
The question was: Why continue to play shows despite already having massive amounts of riches and fame. He answered, “It all goes back to the destiny thing. I made a bargain with it a long time ago, and I’m holding up my end.” When asked who the bargain was made with, he stated, “With the Chief Commander of this earth and the world we can’t see.”Obviously many jumped to speculate that the bargain he made must have been with the devil. Of course Led Zeppelin had many rumors floating around, but it’s always been rumored that the group was under a demonic influence, but it’s hard to say. The group’s guitarist Jimmy Page was pretty obsessed with the occultist Aleister Crowley. He even had Crowley’s famous words inscribed into a vinyl, “Do what thou wilt”. Then went on to buy Aleister Crowley’s house. The fishy incident on July 27th, 1969 had fans running wild with theories of satanic ritualism. The band played at the Seattle Pop Festival that day alongside the band Vanilla Fudge. Both groups stayed in the epic Edgewater Inn, which sits on top of Seattle’s Puget Sound. The story goes on to say a pretty, young groupie, with beautiful red hair was in the room and had been disrobed and tied to a bed and well some very sexually natured things occurred with a mud shark. I suppose she had a taste for the bizarre. Later the group Vanilla Fudge would take credit for the incident, stating that Led Zeppelin was in the hotel, but not part of the activities. By 1985, the Led Zeppelin biography Hammer of the Gods was written and information in the bio came directly from Richard Cole, the band’s tour manager (Peter Grant was their manager), who described a graphic scene that occurred at that time in one of the rooms with the band Led Zeppelin. Referencing the fishy incident. Then there was the story of Jimmy Page accusing Robert Plant of being demonically possessed. He said he witnessed Plant sitting in a corner, leaning against a wall just hanging out while Page was sharing an idea about a new idea about a piece with the group and Plant jumped up and started singing. He created about 80% of the words right then.
This was later known as the song, “Stairway to Heaven”.We definitely can’t forget Jay-Z ! He’s often seen wearing shirts that say, “Do what thou wilt.”The phrase was coined by Aleistar Crowley and most believe it to be a demonic phrase, though I am not completely convinced. Crowley’s meaning behind the phrase was, “You can do whatever you want when it comes to your own spirit and your own body.”Aside from these theories there is one artist who openly claims she becomes possessed when she’s performing… Ellie Goulding claims she kind of gets demonically possessed when performing.
