He used these accounts to discuss himself from a fan perspective and create rumors about himself. In 2007, a rumor emerged about convicted murderer, Karla Homolka, claiming Magnotta was in a relationship with the murderer. By December 2010, desperate for attention and fame he began uploading videos of himself killing kittens in various ways. An unidentified man answered the ad. Many speculate this man was a dress rehearsal or an intended target of murder, but Magnotta backed out. It was May 18th around 11 pm when the surveillance cameras caught Magnotta and his unidentified guest. The man was seen leaving the next day, but with very unsteady legs.Magnotta placed another Craigslist ad in search of another male partner for sex and bondage. This time, Jun Lin answered the ad

Jun Lin (December 30, 1978 – May 24/25, 2012
Jun Lin was an international student from Wuhan, China. He was an undergraduate at Concorida University, studying engineering and computer science. He worked part time in Pointe Saint Charles as a convenience store clerk. He had only been in Montreal since July 2011, he shared a Griffintown area apartment with a roommate.

On May 24th, Jun Lin was captured on a surveillance camera with Luka Magnotta around 10:20 pm, entering Magnotta’s building at 5720 Decarie Boulevard. That same night around 9 pm, his friends reported receiving text messages from his phone. The next morning, Lin’s boss was concerned that he did not come into work.

May 27th 2012, three friends visited his apartment and reported him missing to police on May 29th.

May 25th, 2012, the website bestgore.com uploaded an 11 minute video with the title, “1 Lunatic, 1 Ice Pick”. The video featured a naked man tied to a bed and being stabbed repeatedly with an ice pick, and a kitchen knife. He had sex with the corpse and then dismembered the body into multiple pieces. Then with a knife and fork, he cuts off some flesh to feed to a dog.

Small, but crucial details were noticed in the video. The 1987 song, “True Faith” by New Order was playing and a movie poster for “Casablanca” was on the wall. Authorities were able to obtain a longer version of the video that featured cannibalism. Authorities also found that Magnotta had promoted
the video ten days prior to the actual murder taking place. It is said that Lin was alive when his neck was slashed.

After the murder, he disposed of Lin’s body parts. May 25th at 2:47 am, Magnotta made seven trips to the basement garbage area. Placing the torso in a suitcase, sending a few packages in the mail, he cleaned his apartment out and prepared to leave for Europe.

On May 29th, 2012, the Conservative Party of Canada received a package with a red heart symbol that contained a foot, stained with blood. It was a left foot, smelled extremely foul. A note was found within the package, indicating six body parts had been sent to others. A second package was received at a Canada Post processing facility, with a left hand inside. It was addressed to the Liberal Party.

A janitor noticed a large suitcase near the garbage area on May 25th, it was not picked up by trash services that day. The suitcase smelled terrible because it held the torso of Jun Lin. Several garbage bags in the same garbage area held Lin’s arms and legs. Jun Lin’s head was found a month later in the bushes of a Montreal park.

Authorities arrived to search the scene at the garbage area and discovered human body parts, clothing with blood and various papers that identified Luka Magnotta. Once reviewing the surveillance cameras, authorities identified Luka Magnotta making several trips to the garbage area with full garbage bags in hand. They realized he was the same individual seen on surveillance at the post office, where a package containing a hand had been r
eceived.

Police finally were able to search Magnotta’s apartment at 5720 Decarie Boulevard, #208. He had only lived in the apartment for four months and rent was paid through June 1st. Magnotta had moved mostly everything out of the apartment, but authorities found blood on the mattress, refrigerator, a table and bathtub..

May 30th, 2012, the body parts found were confirmed as belonging to Jun Lin. Magnotta had already fled the country.

Magnotta had sent six packages out, two had been delivered, two more packages began to arrive at their destinations now.

June 5th, the package containing a right foot arrived at St. George’s School. The same day another package arrived with a right hand to False Creek Elementary School, in Vancouver British Columbia. Both packages had come from Montreal.
June 13th, four limbs and torso were DNA matched using samples his family had provided. Lin’s family cremated his body on July 11th and buried the ashes in the Notre Dame Des Neiges Cemetery in Montreal on July 26.

Authorities were now on a worldwide manhunt for Luka Magnotta. On May 31st, 2012, Interpol issued an International Notice, (Red Notice) asking that he be arrested on site and extradited back to Canada. Magnotta officially left Montreal on May 25th, getting on a flight to Paris, using his own passport. When he arrived in France, authorities used his cell phone signal to locate him at a hotel in Bagnolet. Magnotta checked into the hotel using a passport that was fake, bearing the name, “Kirk Trammel”. Authorities arrived at the hotel to find Magnotta had already left, but he had left behind porn magazines and an air sickness bag from the plane.

It was learned that Magnotta had contacts in Paris and authorities followed at least one in hopes of finding Magnotta, but he boarded a bus and made his way to Berlin, Germany.

June 4th, 2012, in an Internet Café in the Neukolln district of Berlin, authorities apprehended Magnotta while he was reading news stories about himself.  He gave authorities various fake names before identifying himself.

June 18th of 2012, Magnotta was extradited to Canada and was placed into solitary confinement due to safety concerns at the Riviere-des-Prairies detention centre.

The twelve week trial came to an end and on December 23rd, 2014, Magnotta was sentenced to life imprisonment, with possible parole in 25 years. He is currently located at Port-Cartier Prison in Quebec.

In June of 2015, it was reported that Magnotta fell in love with another inmate, Anthony Jolin. The two married and are entitled to “visits” with each other.
